I'm participating in both the April Flowers Challenge at [ profile] chalion_ibra and the April Showers Drabblethon at [ profile] day_by_drabble. This opens me up to a whole new world of confusion!

Anyway, if it isn't evident, today marks the start of our month-long drabblethon at [ profile] day_by_drabble. The first prompt is:

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
(T.S. Eliot, "The Waste Land")

If that inspires you and you haven't signed up, get on over there and join in the multifandom goodness!

For my first entry I have, perhaps, committed crimes against my childhood by writing shippy American Girl (Ben/Felicity) fic. What can I say? I've always been a shipper...

April, 1780: A springtime furlough should bring hope and comfort, but instead Ben finds his old friendships and old dreams turned as topsy-turvy as the weather.

Now to switch gears and see what I can come up with for [ profile] chalion_ibra...and hopefully post everything to the right community!
mrstater: (Barefoot Writer)
Still scribbling feverishly at [ profile] chalion_ibra! I'm tickled that I've actually managed to write a piece for each of the first week's prompts. Don't know if I'll be able to keep up this pace with the [ profile] day_by_drabble event starting tomorrow, but I'm getting really into Chalion fic again so I aim to try! Here there be links (again, in the case of a few of them) in case you're interested in a bit of Caz/Betriz fic.

(Incidentally, how do you Chalion fans pronounce Betriz? I've always said it "Beh-TRIZ" (i as in is), but the Chalion Dictionary claims it should be "BEE-trez." I like it my way better!)

Prompt 1: Which Bears Its Fruit in Season
Betriz quibbles with the timing of a visit, but Caz disagrees.

Prompt 2: Five O'clock Shadow
Caz seems to have forgotten something, but don't worry, Betriz will be sure to remind him. (120 words, rated G)

Prompt 3: Who Gives This Woman
The betrothal of Caz and Betriz sparks a flurry of correspondence between Valenda and Cardegoss. (1710 words, rated G)

Prompt 4: Something Blue
Caz reveals himself to be a student of fashion. (300 words, rated PG-13)

Prompt 5: The Last Supper
On the most important night of his life, Caz needs a drink. (120 words, rated G)

Prompt 6: Green
Betriz is more than just the joyful recipient of Cazaril's God-addled poetry. (150 words, rated G)

Prompt 7: Naked
Cazaril's past associations with nudity threaten to interfere with his wedding night. (1028 words, rated R)
mrstater: (Triple Nerd Score)
Have just been eating Pringles with my lunch and proving their slogan shamefully true. And have been reminded of this joke of Mitch Hedberg's:

Now back to writing Chalion smut...
mrstater: (Spring)
I've been writing for the April Flowers challenge over at [ profile] chalion_ibra, so if you're a fan of Lois McMaster Bujold's Chalion series, these pieces (and the ones written by the other authors there) might be just what the fanfic reader ordered on a Tuesday morning (especially if you ship Cazaril/Betriz). The challenge runs all month long, so watch the community for lots of Chalion goodness in the days ahead!

Prompt 1: Which Bears Its Fruit in Season
Betriz quibbles with the timing of a visit, but Caz disagrees.

Prompt 2: Five O'clock Shadow
Caz seems to have forgotten something, but don't worry, Betriz will be sure to remind him.

Prompt 3

Prompt 4: Something Blue
Caz reveals himself to be a student of fashion.

Prompt 5: The Last Supper
On the most important night of his life, Caz needs a drink.

And if you like fanfic of all colors, don't forget that the April Showers Drabblethon starts Friday at [ profile] day_by_drabble!
mrstater: (Barefoot Writer)
Happy Monday! I come bearing gifts of fic to hopefully brighten this cold, dreary Monday morning. (Not best pleased about this turn in the TX weather--it was 85 and I wore shorts all last week, now it's suddenly in the bloody 40s and rainy!)

First, a rec:
The Apprentice "In 1998, Severus Snape was given a second chance. In 1976, he has to figure out how to take it."

It's AU/Snape Lives/time-traveling!Snape/Lily, and if you've ever had the remotest interest in that pairing (or even if you haven't), you should read this because it's imaginative and clever and funny and touching and a damn addictive WIP.

Also, because of this:

And then she reached up, threaded her hand through his hair behind his head, pulled his face towards hers, and got hit in the eye by his nose.

"Oops," Lily said as Severus died inside.

2. An announcement:
I've joined Archive of Our Own, where I recently read a few really high-quality Hunger Games fics. Thought it would be a nice place to house what I feel is my best work from various fandoms. It's a great site, and I'm really excited to be there.

3. A reminder:
One of the fics I've opened my AO3 account with is the Remus and Snape genfic I posted over the weekend, On the Mend. If you missed it, you can read it there, or here.

4. A meme:
Snagged from [ profile] faded_facade:

Pick any character from a fandom of mine and I'll answer the following questions:

1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her.
2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
3) Can you relate to this character at all? Does he/she grip you emotionally?
4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by his/her relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how would you see yourself interacting with him/her? Would you get along well? Fall in love with him/her? Dislike? Have a friendly rivalry?
8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about this character (if you dislike) to someone new to fandom?
10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?

And finally...
Don't forget to join [ profile] day_by_drabble if you haven't yet! This week we'll be posting the rules for our first Multifandom Drabblethon, which starts on April 8! And if you're a member of fic communities that allow pimping for stuff like that, let [ profile] godricgal or me know!
mrstater: (Lupin Family)
Title: On the Mend
Author: [ profile] mrstater
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters & Pairings: Remus Lupin, Severus Snape, Harry Potter, Teddy Lupin; inferred Remus/Tonks, Snape/Lily
Rating & Warnings: PG-13 for language
Format & Word Count: one-shot, 4315 words
Summary: Having survived the final battle, Remus Lupin and Severus Snape need healing from more than just their war wounds. AU.
Author's Notes: Genfic from [ profile] mrstater? Remus and Snape genfic? Note the &, not the /. ;) I know, my gob is smacked, too. But I've been reading a bit of Snape AU fic this week, which caused me to re-read bits of Deathly Hallows, and it got me to thinking about how sexy Alan Rickman is what a shame it is that Snape dies, because it would be really interesting to see how the Order members (particularly Remus) and wizarding society at large would interact with Snape once they know his true role in everything. Combine those thoughts with a quote that kept going through my head, "Time wounds all heels," which an English teacher of mine who was most definitely a Slytherin always used to say, and this is the result.

Obviously it's AU since nobody dies, and I've taken a few liberties with the setting, as well, because if I'd had Remus and Snape recovering in St. Mungo's, their injuries would likely have them in separate wards (Spell Damage and Dangerous Bites), and the whole premise depended on them being stuck in the same place together. Hopefully it works. :)

By far the biggest adjustment for me in becoming a mom (well, apart from not getting enough sleep and never getting to use the bathroom in private) has been the extremely limited writing time. Even when I have found the odd hour or two to write, I've found myself short on inspiration. It's just hard to shift gears! Actually, I don't think this difficulty is unique to moms so much as to any writer whose RL pulls in a dozen directions other than to the computer. My f-list used to consist pretty much strictly of fanfic, but now it seems no one, including myself, has much time for it, or our interests lie in different places.

Then two weeks ago the International Women's Day drabble meme went viral. Y'all came out of the woodworks to request and write drabbles from all across the fandom spectrum. It was challenging, fun, not a huge time commitment, and, most importantly, gave me that addicted-to-writing feeling I haven't had since before the Tater Tot was born. Seriously, I've been in withdrawal since I finished all my drabble requests!

I was tempted to start another round of the meme when [ profile] godricgal and I thought: wouldn't it be great to have a venue dedicated solely to writing drabbles for whatever fandom we fancied? Not finding anything like this on LJ, we decided to fill the niche ourselves. (Okay, speaking of withdrawal, we were possibly feeling the effects of 4.5 years passing since we last started a fanfic community...)

Anyway, all that to say: we're super excited to invite each and every one of you, and your various fandoms, to [ profile] day_by_drabble!

There's a thread for getting to know each other and our fandom interests, and in a few days we'll be posting the info about our first event, the April Showers Drabblethon.

So, whether you're a single-minded member of the Internet's largest fandom, or are the very first to dabble in fanfic, or flit around between dozens of fandoms--or all of the above!--become a member of [ profile] day_by_drabble for a daily dose of inspiration.

And don't forget to tell your friends. :) (Feel free to snag the ad banner to promote the community on your f-lists and favorite fanfic sites.)

LJ Things

Mar. 15th, 2011 11:00 pm
mrstater: (Triple Nerd Score)
Just whipped up a new LJ layout for spring, thanks to Mr. Tater installing a graphics program on my computer (Paint.NET--great and super easy to use!), and while I'm here I have a few questions:

1. I'd like some generic, non-fandom userpics. Who are y'all's favorite icon-makers?

2. For some reason I can't get the comment links in my entry footers to hover in light green. I checked out the FlexiSquares community and can't figure out if it's under .comments or .div.comments. What should I be doing in my CSS?

3. The International Women's Day drabble meme got me re-addicted to writing, and I'm hankering for some sort of drabble-a-day challenge. But I don't really want to have to stick to any one fandom for a whole month. Anyone know of a community that hosts a multi-fandom (as in, you can write for whatever characters you want) drabble-a-day challenge?

4. Pertaining to the above, if there's not such an event currently in existence, would anyone be interested in participating in this sort of thing if someone where to organize one?
mrstater: (Waffle Sylar)
Finally finished all my International Women's Day drabbles. Only none of them was drabble length. Fifteen ficlets, for a total of 5,298 words. Not bad for five days' work--certainly the most writing I've done in a very long time.

Thanks to everyone who offered prompts. This was a fun exercise to stretch the writing muscles, and a great tribute to some of my favorite fictional females.

Tough I'm thinking that if we're going to be really good feminists, we need to do a male version of this meme. What say you all?

This idea (unwisely)stolen from [ profile] tree_and_leaf, in honor of International Women's Day:

Name a woman in one of my fandoms and I will attempt a drabble about her.

Here's all the fandoms I've written, but if you can think of something else I've expressed interest in, I may be willing to give it a go (such as The Hunger Games or Downton Abbey or Anne of Green Gables):

The Chronicles of Narnia
Harry Potter
Lark Rise to Candleford
Little Dorrit
Sense and Sensibility
Star Trek (Reboot)
The Time Traveler's Wife

Book Meme

Swiped from [ profile] tree_and_leaf, because I have nothing better to do with myself while the Tater Tot naps than do memes. (Ha! But he slept for all of 30 minutes and then took 45 minutes to get back to sleep--I might not have bothered had he not been up at 6 AM and refused a morning nap, and I'm too brain-dead to do much of anything besides memes.)

The book I am reading: The White Queen by Philippa Gregory. I have rather mixed feelings about it. The story is interesting, but the writing quality fluctuates, and so far the characters aren't gripping me quite like the ones in the Tudor books. I started reading Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold before that, but got a bit bogged down in all the space politics and decided to take a break from sci-fi for a while because I recently finished reading all the Orson Scott Card books.

The book I am writing: Need to do some more work on my romantic comedy, Songs for Piano and Voice, but I don't have a lot of time these days (see above: Tater Tots, Napping Poorly). I'm going to try and write some short stories for a contest I discovered in a magazine yesterday, though.

The book I love most: Probably Anne of Green Gables.

The last book I received as a gift: My brother gave me Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson for Christmas, and I read about a chapter and couldn't get into it because the narrator is talking about her grandfather and not giving me a good idea about who she is. I'll probably pick it up again some other time.

Title: Like a Virgin
Author: [ profile] mrstater
Fandom: LOST
Pairing: Sayid/Shannon
Rating & Warnings: PG-13 for sexual innuendo
Format & Word Count: ficlet, 825 words
Summary: Shannon surprises Sayid with a personal question that leads him to an even more unexpected answer. [1x20, "Do No Harm"]
Author's Notes: I have not written LOST fanfic since November of 2005, but the other day I was listening to Dido's No Angel album, which I listened to a lot back in my days in the LOST fandom, and it took me right back in time. This little dialogue popped into my head, so I had to write it down. Hope any of you Shayiders who are still out there enjoy!

In just a few hours, it'll be Oscar night! We'll finally find out who will take home this year's statuettes. But if YOU were a member of the Academy, who would you vote for? We'll send the winners of this poll an LJ icon.

You'll note I’ve omitted most of the technical categories because I really don’t know enough about them (as if I’m an expert on the categories on which I have opined!) or care enough to judge. So if there's someone you really want to win Best Sound Mixing, then give them a shout out in the comments.

This is your thread for all manner of Oscar chatter. So if you think Titanic was the biggest shiptrainwreck in Oscar history or want to debate whether Shakespeare in Love really deserved top honors over Saving Private Ryan back in ’99 (Yes, it did.) then comment away!

It's Oscar week! So let's talk movies!

I never managed to see all the Best Picture nominees back when there were only five, but last year I made it to six and this year I've watched all ten.

Fun as it is to see more great films recognized, I like to speculate about which ones would make the cut if the Oscars were as they used to be and only five could score a nomination. Just for kicks, here is my ranking of this year's Best Picture-nominated films (lots of cuts for lots of pretentious rambling about films):

10. The Kids Are All Right )

9. Winter's Bone )

**(If I could have it my way, Winter's Bone and The Kids Are All Right wouldn't be nominated at all, while The Town and How to Train Your Dragon would. But no one ever asks me for my opinion about these things.)**

8. The Fighter )

7. Black Swan )

6. Toy Story 3 )

5. The Social Network )

4. True Grit )

3. 127 Hours )

2. Inception )

And the Oscar goes to...

1. The King's Speech )

I'll return later this week for my Oscar night predictions, but for now, what are your thoughts on this year's films? Am I way off base? Any movies you feel were overlooked?

...but would it be in-character for House to watch The Colbert Report?

I ask because Mr. Tater and I made the discovery this morning (about a year late) that Hugh Laurie placed a photo of Stephen Colbert in his House office set after Colbert had a photo of Laurie on his set.

Hilarious even if it has nothing to do with characterization, but the geek in me wants to know.

Personally I always saw House as an Ayn Rand follower, so maybe he'd go for an uber-Conservative parodist?
mrstater: (Caspian/Ramandu's Daughter)
Title: Bright and Morning Star (2/?)
Author: MrsTater
Fandom: The Chronicles of Narnia
Pairing: Caspian/Ramandu's Daughter
Format & Word Count: WIP, 4708 words in Chapter 2
Rating & Warnings: PG-13 for mild sexuality and adult themes
Summary: "Caspian and his men all came safely back to Ramandu's Island. And the three lords woke from their sleep. Caspian married Ramandu's daughter and they all reached Narnia in the end…" But it's a long voyage to Narnia, and the waters of marriage are more troubled and difficult to navigate than the sea. [post-VotDT]
Author's Notes: At last, an update! My apologies for my tardiness, but that's life with a Tater Tot, and I caught a bad case of writer's block mid-chapter. Finished up quickly enough once I got over that hump, and hopefully the Chapter of Doom isn't as horrible to read as it was to write. ;) Inexplicably I find that the name Liliandil has grown on me, so I now refer to her as such in this chapter; previous ones will be updated to reflect that change. As always, feedback is welcome and greatly appreciated.

Don't you hate it when you've got a fic or chapter of a fic all planned out, then you realize you've completely forgotten about a major and crucial bit of canon that renders said plan impossible?

For some inane reason, I was thinking the destruction of Dark Island was an invention of the VotDT film, and that in the book they simply sailed out of it and left it behind. That is how it seems at first, but a few paragraphs later it's disappeared and Rhoop says, "You've destroyed it forever!" Whoops.

Back to the drawing board...

Y'all know I love me some James McAvoy, but he's playing young Charles Xavier in the new X-Men movie? Really? Perhaps I'm just overly used to Patrick Stewart as old Charles Xavier, but even as a James fangirl I can't help but think this is extremely bizarre casting.

On the other hand, after the crapfests that were X3 and Wolverine, James McAvoy is about the only thing that could entice me to go see another X-Men movie...Then again, Kevin Bacon is also in it, and I cannot think of anyone less X-Mannish...

(While I knew there were rumors of this movie, I had no idea it had actually been made, much less that it was due out this summer.)

Following the news of Anne Hathaway being cast as Catwoman in the next Batman movie, I'm thinking someone needs to tell directors that you can't cast just anyone, no matter how talented they are, in superhero movies.
