mrstater: (Spock Pointy Eared Bastard)
Tonight, as Mr. Tater is out with the guys, I lost my Star Trek TOS virginity. Very aptly, to Amok Time. I hope it's okay to say that I thought was freaking hilarious. It is such a ludicrous premise -- how on earth did Nimoy and Shatner do it with a straight face? I wonder if they had to do a lot of takes...

Silly and campy it was, I totally get why people love this show. They really are the most endearing characters with the best dynamics between the little subgroups of characters. How can you not love Spock breaking out into a grin when he realizes Jim isn't dead? And Bones harassing him about it? And Sulu and Chekov's frustration at all the course alterations, and the jokes about being space-sick?

A couple random observations:

1. I did not realize just how short those minidresses were.

2. Stonn, the Vulcan T'Pring wanted, looks exactly like my high school boyfriend who, in the words of Spock, was definitely not as good to have as to want.

3. As Spock was suffering all his Pon Farr afflictions, I could totally imagine Zachary Quinto doing it. They had so better do a Pon Farr subplot in one of the sequels, because it would be hilarious. I can't decide who would be funnier -- Zach as Spock, or Chris Pine reacting to the concept. I'm erupting in giggles just thinking about it.

So, which episode should I watch next? Or should I just watch them all from the beginning? Are they all available at Hulu?

I'm writing (another) Star Trek fic, dealing with some of the aftermath of the Battle of Vulcan, but am having trouble finding some of the information I need. Thought maybe some of you f-listers who are long-time Trekkies and/or have seen the movie multiple times (or just have better memories than me!) and/or are further along in the audiobook than I am might be able to help...

Spoiler Alert! )

That's all I can think of at the moment. Thanks in advance for any info!

On another fic note, for all you Lark Rise to Candleford fans out there (and I realize this applies to all of about four of you ;)), I have finally written the fifth and final chapter of A Life Worth Living, as I thought it would be best to tie up that loose end before I get sucked deeper and deeper into this amazing black hole that is the Star Trek fandom. After a very fun afternoon on it (though it is slightly jarring to switch from writing fic set in 23rd century space to writing fic set in 19th century rural England), I've sent it off to the amazing [livejournal.com profile] godricgal to work her beta magic on, but hopefully you'll see it on an f-list near you tomorrow sometime!

Finally, the best. interview. ever. with Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine, both of whom are awesome.

Signing off, because I've got a date with a two-mile run at 0600 hours.

Good God. It is eating my brain.

Crack!

I tried to quit Heroes. I really did. But I kept watching, because Mr. Tater wanted to at least finish off the season, and what do you know but after four or five episodes of unadulterated loathing, the penultimate episode was Sylar-centric, awesome, and totally drew me back. Even Mr. Tater, who does not have a crush on Sylar like I do, commented afterward that all the Sylar episodes are good, not least of all because Zachary Quinto can actually act. And he is so utterly captivating on screen, no matter what ridiculous lines they give him. (Although, it seems to me that as inconsistent as the writers are with Sylar's back story, they write Sylar better than they write anyone else.) Anyway, I'm back on the love side of my love-hate relationship with Heroes and am looking forward to the finale next week, especially if this really comes to pass. (Because it is so OTT I adore it.) And I will probably be back for season four.

A close second to Sylar rekindling my love for this show was Ando telling Hiro, "You're a little Fascist like Superman."

Cut for spoilers for the past couple episodes. )

Heroes sucks even more hardcore when you've been watching BSG. )

In other news, I renewed my paid account the other day and completely forgot about the free icon space you get for doing that. So I was pleasantly surprised when I went to upload new Helo and Sharon icons I made tonight and didn't have to delete any of my other icons! Not that I probably won't end up getting rid of some other ones, since I'm currently so in love with Helo that I want more of him on my LJ. (I dreamed about him all last night. Running away from Cylons in my neighborhood has never been so nice!) But for now, it was as squee-inducing as...certain things that surprised me regarding Helo in the BSG finale. ;)

Decided it was about time my favorite show was represented with icons.

That was the most evil cliffie EVAR!!! )

I just realized last night as I was un-decorating my LJ and putting up a new layout (inspired by the calendar of stunning Alphonse Mucha artwork I bought last night) that I haven't done a post yet this year. (Happy New Year, by the way! Hope everyone's is off to a great start, and hasn't been marred by a migraine like mine was yesterday.) So here I am to remedy my 2009 postlessness, with a book recommendation, since in a few days I hope to be making fic posts for a new fandom interest.

[livejournal.com profile] gilpin25 has been on me for months to read Lois McMaster Bujold's The Curse of Chalion, even going so far as to send me a copy for my birthday. I was reading a Carl Hiassen book at the time, which I only just got around to finishing a week or so before Christmas because it wasn't the most compelling book ever. (Skinny Dip, if you're interested, though I don't highly recommend it.)

Chalion on the other hand, is a real page-turner; if it hadn't been for Christmas choir concerts and traveling out of town to see my parents and Mr. Tater's traveling in to town to see us, I would have finished it in a couple of days. After finishing it, my one negative thought is: "Why didn't I read it sooner?" Oh, and I suppose there is one more negative thought: "Why can't it go on?"

Here's a list of reasons why you should run, not walk, to your local library or bookstore and get your hands on The Curse of Chalion: )

Have I convinced you to pick up Chalion? I'm sure I'm not doing the book nearly enough justice, so I'll let it speak for itself: you can read the first chapter online here.

It's going to be tough to think of things to say that don't echo [livejournal.com profile] jncar verbatim, but I shall try.

It does tingle. )

Best. Day. Ever. )

Warning, I'm up past my bedtime, and may not be totally coherent. )

And in case you missed it while LJ was being flakey today, I updated Angel of Death with Part IV. Enjoy!
mrstater: (Adorkable)
I swear to you, they could spend forty minutes a week on nothing but watchmaker!Gabriel Gray sitting in his shop, twiddling his thumbs while wearing his sweater vests, side-parted hair, and watchmaker glasses, and I would happily watch the show. )

There's probably lots more I wanted to say about this episode, but my mind's mush now after not enough sleep last night, a long workout this morning, and a full day of work. So I'll close with a musical selection that's relevant to the discussion. I was listening to Radiohead's Pablo Honey album the other day and thought "Creep" was the perfect song for Sylar. (And apparently so did a bazillion other people at YouTube who made Sylar fanvids to the song.) But here's a cover of "Creep" performed by Scala & Kolacny Brothers, a Belgian teenaged girls' choir. Even if you're not a Heroes/Sylar fan, but just a music fan, you should check this out, because it's beautiful. (Warning - it does contain an F-bomb or two.)

(They've also done Everything In Its Right Place" from Kid A, a lovely cover of Coldplay's Yellow, and U2's With Or Without You, among others.)
mrstater: (Hi Five Turtle)
If I were Sylar, I would... )

Completely Random, Non-Heroes Comment:

While I have said on numerous past occasions that I could see any actor but David Thewlis several actors in the role of Remus Lupin, I recently ran across this image of author Jasper Fforde, and it's the closest I've ever seen to my mental image of Remus. I think it's because he looks a bit like a short-haired version of the Remus illustration in the US edition of OotP, and I always imagine a real-life version of that whenever I'm writing Remus....

My cousin sent me a "Vote Petrelli" button Piece of Flair at Facebook. I am now, honest to God, seriously considering writing in Nathan Petrelli on by ballot come election day, or at least wearing a "Vote Petrelli" button to the polls, because I like him better than both candidates. Knowing fandoms, there's probably an active campaign for Petrelli; I imagine he could probably win a decent percentage of the third party vote if people write him in.

I didn't think I'd get to watch Heroes till tonight, but last night's episode had downloaded by the time I got home from choir rehearsal, and I was able to convince Mr. Tater to stay up and watch it on the pretense that I was wired from singing (which was true) and 40 minutes in front of the TV would help me wind down (which was definitely not true). Episode 3.5 was good enough that I laid awake till after midnight, dreamed about it all night, and then woke up too early this morning still thinking about it.

Cut for spoilers )
mrstater: (Mmm Sylar)
I've been holding out for this week's episode of Heroes till tonight, because Monday's choir night and Tuesday Mr. Tater was watching the debate. Man, was it worth the wait! The season premiere didn't have me convinced that this was going to continue to be one of my favorite shows, but thankfully, the most recent two episodes weren't as lame as I feared. Not nearly. I always did have a thing for the bad guys, and since "Villains" is the name of the game...

[livejournal.com profile] eido, I am totally counting on you to share some squeeage with me, since we tend to be in agreement about so much. ;)

Spoilers for episode 3.4, 'I Am Become Death' )
